Testing the 6.5mm .277, 7mm, and .338 Afterburners

I'll break this up into 3 separate posts to keep it a little more manageable.

I have the 102gr 6.5mm, 103gr .277", 117gr 7mm, and 200gr .338" to try out. I'm just starting to work on loads with each bullet, I'll play around with testing expansion later. 102g 6.5mm I'm going to test these at the low end out of a 6.5 Grendel, and the top end out of a 6.5/338 RUM improved. I just got my first round of testing with the Grendel done today. Here's what I have so far. 6.5 Grendel (CZ 527 with 19" Blackhole barrel, 1:8" twist) Hornady brass CCI 450 primer H335 powder 102gr Apex Afterburner 2.265" OAL 27.4gr - 2408 fps 27.8gr - 2479 fps 28.2gr - 2501 fps 28.6gr - 2561 fps 29.0gr - 2606 fps 29.4gr - 2617 fps 29.8gr - 2670 fps 30.2gr - 2712 fps I didn't shoot these for groups, just velocity. The 30.2gr charge still didn't show any pressure, so I'll probably try bumping…

Thanks for the awesome testing! Always appreciate your work! Looks like some of the pictures didn’t come through. In the future, you can post them directly here and don’t need to link them. They're posted below. Thanks again!

Customer Input on Next Bullet Releases

Hey folks!

This is our first official post on our own platform! We are excited about our recent launch of several products over the last couple of months, the Afterburner, Haymaker and Target bullets, and we're looking forward to getting feedback from the field over the next few months. We are currently working through getting the rest of the Afterburner line currently on our website released. Bullets yet to be available are the 102gr .264", 103gr .277", 117gr .284", and 200gr .338".

Once those are out and available, we thought it would be a good idea to poll the customer base ahead of time and get their thoughts on what they'd like to see next. Internally, we're a bit torn between some other "must have's" and stepping off into some of the more specialized, fast twist options for long range setups. We won't limit the poll to the Afterburner lin…

With the Afterburner design, we won’t be able to get anywhere near a 120+gr in 6.5mm for a 1:8” twist. Just not enough rotational inertia to provide the stability needed with the way the Afterburner is sculpted and constructed. Our yet to be released 1:7” twist isn’t even that heavy but should do really well in any 6.5 with that twist or faster for serious long range.

We know a little more since the last time we looked at a maximized 1:8” twist for the 6.5. I don’t think it provides enough of a difference from the current 102gr, which even though it’s nose length is restricted by and the velocities to stabilize it with a 1:8” are set by the Grendel, it’s not giving up much versus one optimized for a 6.5 Creedmoor or faster in a 3.00” magazine. We will circle back on this though, and provide details of what we think we can do if anything. If we see a step change in performance, we will definitely consider it.
